The word casino means a pavillion, a small villa, or a summerhouse built for entertainment, mostly on an Italian villa or pallazo. The Villa Guilia and Villa Farnese are exmaples of such casinos. In contemporary Italian, this term pertains to a bordello also known as casa chiusa meaning closed house.

The word casino came to include other structures where entertainment like gambling and sport took place. The Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island is an example of this kind of casino.

There are some casinos which were not used for gaming. An example of this is the Copenhagen Casino which was a theatre. During the 1848 Revilution the hallsof this casino was used for mass public meetings where Denmark was made a constitutional monarchy. It was a well known Danish theatre until the 1937. Another casino which was never used for gambling can be found in Hanko, Finland. The Hanko Casino is one of that town's most spacious landmark. It was used as a banquet hall for Russian nobility. It was turned into a spa resort in the 1800 and currently a turned in to a restaurant.

Mostly under the law, gambling is prohibited to minors or persons with the age of 17 and below. The legally accepted age is 18 years and above.

Casinos offer a wide range of games for its players. There are chance games such as the slot machines, roulette, and baccarat. There are also skills games such as blackjack and poker.
