BetOnSports Ignores Federal Prosecution

One of the largest online betting and gambling companies in the UK, BetOnSports, will ignore federal criminal prosecution and civil case filed by US which aimed at shutting its operation. The lawyers of BetOnSports failed to shop up last Monday morning, July 31, 2006, for the arraignment on criminal charges.

The federal prosecutors asked a judge to order BetOnSports banned from doing business with the US market and asked for more than $4.5 billion. BetOnSports would not answer the charges.

US attorney Catherine Hanaway said the case represents the largest prosecution of an Internet gambling company ever.

US gamblers were allowed to bet and gamble billions of dollars even though BetOnSports knew it was illegal. BetOnSports was charged because of this.

Hanaway said "They're just doing what they have been doing. I don't think it's surprising that they would continue to." Hanaway would not comment what they would do next. The company and its executives could face additional penalties, including arrest warrants if BetOnSports personnel come to the US.

Kevin Smith, spokesman of the company said BetOnSports didn't receive any paperwork from the civil or criminal case. Federal prosecutors opposed this, they said the papers were faxed to London and Costa Rica and given directly to BetOnSports since the arrest of CEO David Carruthers. David Carruthers was fired since. David Carruthers is being held in the St.Louis area.
